How to write a college essay

It is fair to say that there is no one way to know how to write a college essay. There are a number of important tips or ideas you should consider when creating your college essay but different students will take different approaches. Of course the bottom line is that you not only pass but that your essay rates a high if not a very high score. How can you achieve that result? Well there are a number of ingredients to learn how to write a college essay.

  • look at the work of other students who have been successful
  • talk to your teacher or tutor about what you have written
  • follow the various tips and ideas listed below

Write as an expert

You will have selected a topic for your essay. We could spend some time talking about that process but assuming it is a topic you are happy with and preferably have an interest in, we come to the point where you need to research and gain information. The idea is that the essay you write will be from the point of view of an expert, from someone who knows a great deal about the subject. This is the first test to which your essay will be put. Is the person writing this essay an expert? Do they know their subject well?

Get the thesis statement correct

The thesis statement is the trigger for all the writing which follows. It is a statement which you will set out to prove throughout your essay. So not only must you choose wisely as far as the topic is concerned, having done that you must then create a powerful thesis statement. It is powerful if you are able to provide evidence to support the argument regarding your thesis statement. The more impressive the points you can make to support your thesis statement, the better your essay will be.

Planning

If you really want to know how to write a college essay, know that nobody writes a good essay off the cuff. Nobody writes a great essay unless they prepare well beforehand. This is where your planning or outline of your essay plays such an important role. Many people argue that the more time they spend planning, the less time they spend writing. And furthermore, with excellent planning and research, the writing has never been so easy. So think long and hard about the structure of your essay, about which points go in which paragraph and have a detailed written outlined in front of you before you start to write.

Introduction

Many people argue this is the most important part of your college essay. Remember you are one of hundreds if not thousands of students who will be submitting an essay. Think of the long-suffering academics who need to read and grade your essay. Jolt them out of their slumber. You can achieve that by writing a brilliant introduction. And the beginning of the introduction, your opening sentence, is the one place to really set the pace. Work on this opening sentence. Refine it. Make it both arresting and intoxicating.

The body of your essay

After your introduction you set out to prove your thesis statement. You will have a number of points to make to prove your thesis statement. Present these points in order of importance with the most important point being listed first. Aim to make your essay flow. The reader will find it easy to follow your logic as one sentence moves seamlessly into the next.

Conclusion and editing

Your conclusion should be short and to the point. It is a summary of what you have written before. Do not introduce new points on new information in your conclusion. The conclusion should be a potted history of your argument. And when the conclusion is finished your work has only just begun. Now you must edit your work. Read it aloud. Give it to others to obtain feedback. Look for the mechanical mistakes such as spelling, grammar and syntax. Look for style errors which include repetition and vague writing.
