How To Create A Catchy Narrative Essay Title In 3 Steps

Crafting a catchy title for your narrative essay is a key part of creating a well-written narrative. The title is the first step, and you should give it the importance it needs in order to appeal to the reader and make them want to continue reading the rest of your article. If the title does not intrigue them, they are just as likely to abandon it as they are to go on to read the rest of it.

There are three important steps that go into writing an appealing title and they are as follows:

  1. Draw the reader in – You should pen a title that leaves something to the reader’s imagination. It should make them think – even wonder. You should aim to get their mind moving in that direction and make them want to read on, to find out where it is going. They should want to form their own opinions and discover what happens next. Use your personal reaction to the title as a reference – would it intrigue you? If it does, then others are likely to be intrigued by it as well.
  2. Be clear on your topic – Though you want to leave a little ambiguity, too much of it can be a bad thing. If your title is too vague, or not actually connected to the topic of your essay, this leaves the reader confused and disappointed. It should be intriguing, but also leading. Do not change direction between title and narrative.
  3. If possible, use a compound title – Single-word titles are not only difficult to get right but also may not convey all you are hoping to get across to the reader. Using a compound title can be a good way to make a statement as well as ask a question; or, make a statement and leave room for the reader’s imagination to go to work. These both work to your benefit in title-composing.

Since the title is going to set the tone for your entire essay, it’s vital that you get it right. Put some thought and imagination into it; don’t just go with the first thing that comes into your head. Even if you are sure of what you want to say, play around with the words a little. Explore adjectives; change the order of the words –while still keeping proper sentence structure in mind. It doesn’t have to be too difficult.
