3 Tips for Writing an Argumentative Essay

The argumentative essay is a piece of writing that tries to convince the reader of a particular opinion, or side, on a single issue. When you’re writing one, make sure that you know where you stand, because that will be the core of the essay. No matter what subject or topic you choose (or if it’s chosen by your teacher for you) you can make it work to your advantage. Simply choose a stance, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be the one that you really believe in, maybe it’s the opposite because there is more research material for the opposite side, or just because you wish to explore the opposing views to your true beliefs.

No matter which way you approach it, an argumentative essay can be a piece of cake to write if you know what you’re doing ahead of time. Getting organized is the best thing that you can do to help yourself, and it gets easier with time. When you’re in the habit of always staying tidy with your assignments and other projects, it will be second nature to you. Start by taking all of your papers, websites, and other research materials that you’ve gathered, and put them all in one place. This can be a place on your desk or on your computer’s hard drive, but regardless it needs to be all in one place. Also take any instructions from your teacher or examples that you wish to use and add them to this pile or folder as well.

Now, you are ready to get writing! Here are a few ways you can sort your files within their one place to help yourself even more:

  1. Sort them by which arguments you want to present. Put all of the quotes, books, and other materials for your first argument in one pile, all the materials for the second in another, etc. as well as the questions or quotes you want to use in your introduction and conclusion paragraphs.
  2. You could sort them by relevancy if you’re not sure that you’re going to use all of them in your essay or not. Put the ones that clearly outline your point of view first, and the weaker ones last.
  3. Another option is to sort them by chronological order. If you are telling a story of events in your essay, you might want to have your facts in the order that they actually happened.
