Creating an Illustration Essay: Basic Rules to Keep in Mind

There are many kinds of essays that you will have to write throughout the years of your studies. One of them is an illustration essay. This type of essays uses examples and word illustrations to describe an idea in a way that is easily-comprehensible to readers who are unfamiliar with the topic. Illustrative paper is sometimes called an expository or explanation essay, because it is used to clarify a concept, thought, or notion.

You will come across illustration academic papers often, so here are a few basic rules to keep in mind when you need to write this type of paper.

  1. Choose a topic and create a thesis statement.
  2. Try to come up with your thesis, or main point, before you start writing. Be sure to have enough relevant information to make your claims. Once you have decided what to write about, create a thesis statement. Shape your main idea into a clear sentence. Remember that you are writing the essay to support this thesis.

  3. Determine who your audience is.
  4. When writing your essay, it is important to keep in mind who your readers are and what their point of view on the matter might be. Consider how listening to your opinion might be important to them.

  5. Back up your thesis with examples.
  6. Illustrate your point, keeping in mind your audience and their possible attitude on the subject of discussion. Remember that the stories you tell should have a convincing and positive message. Each example or story should be described in separate paragraphs, and it helps to use exemplifiers such as “for example”, “namely”, “including”, “for instance”, etc. Keep in mind that personalized stories are the most effective; however, you may also use hypothetical stories if none of your personal experiences are applicable.

  7. Do not overload your audience.
  8. You are free to use as many stories as you need to make your point, but do not exceed that amount. Usually 3-4 relevant stories are enough to convince the readers.

  9. Go back to your thesis statement.
  10. Make sure every paragraph you write supports your thesis. Do not deviate from the main idea throughout the piece.

  11. Write a strong conclusion.
  12. A solid conclusion is as important as a powerful introduction. In the concluding paragraph you should state that you have proven the correctness of your thesis with the help of the examples.

  13. Revise.
  14. Reread what you have written. Make sure all the paragraphs of your essay support the initial claim. Adjust the body of your paper if needed.
