Rocket and artillery units of the Azerbaijani army are conducting new exercises as part of the 2022 training plan, the Defense Ministry reported.

“The rocket and artillery units, having left the permanent deployment points on an alarm signal, moved along the planned routes and took up firing positions,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

The exercises aim to improve the command staff’s rapid decision-making capabilities, building on combat experience gained in the 44th war with Armenia in 2020.

The drills are also aimed at advancing the personnel’s fire control capabilities in interacting with other types of troops, as well as developing their other practical skills, according to the ministry.

Azerbaijan periodically holds exercises to improve the combat readiness of its military personnel.

The exercises also aim to improve combat interaction and coordination between the military during operations, as well as to develop commanders’ military decision-making and unit management skills.

Azerbaijan and Armenia entered the second war after the latter started firing on Azerbaijani civilians and military positions from September 27, 2020. The war ended on November 10 with the signing of a trilateral peace agreement by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia.

The peace agreement stipulated the return of the regions of Kalbajar, Aghdam and Lachin occupied by Armenia. Prior to the signing of the agreement, the Azerbaijani army had liberated around 300 villages, settlements, city centers and the historic town of Shusha. Azerbaijani army declared victory against Armenian troops. The signed agreement required Armenia to withdraw its troops from Azerbaijani lands it had occupied since the early 1990s.
