In 2017, the head of the Main Rocket and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry, Lieutenant General Nikolai Parshin, announced the development of the 120 mm Magnolia self-propelled artillery gun on the chassis of a two-link tracked armored vehicle and Tor-M2DT anti-aircraft missile system on the DT-30MS snow and swamp vehicle.

The first reports about the Magnolia project appeared in 2018. The characteristics of the Magnolia were first revealed at the international military-technical event Army-2019 when the developer presented promotional materials for self-propelled weapons for inspection. The first model of the self-propelled gun was exhibited during Army-2020.

The Central Research Institute in Burevestnik designed it as part of the R&D of Nabrosok, which also produced the 2S41 Drok self-propelled mortar and the 2S40 Flox cannon. It was reported that an artillery weapon on a two-section carrier was designed with a universal 120 mm gun. Magnolia’s 2A80 cannon can function as a howitzer, mortar, and cannon. The cannon can fire high-explosive, fragmentation, incendiary, thermobaric, fragmentation, etc. projectiles. range up to 8.5 km, and the range can be extended to 10 km when using guided rockets. The rate of fire is ten rounds per minute and an ammunition load has 80 rounds.

The Magnolia self-propelled artillery system is built on the DT-30PM chassis of the two-link armored tracked carrier. The fighting compartment is mounted on a two-section tracked platform of an improved Vityaz DT-30PM snow and swamp vehicle. The front section with a five-wheel chassis carries the driver’s cabin, power units and system elements. The six-wheeled rear frame carries the combat compartment borrowed from the Vena 2S31 self-propelled mortar. The turret design allows for horizontal laying of the round sight gun. Magnolia can fire all types of 120mm mortar rounds and effectively complete a wide range of missions. It functions as a cannon for direct fire and as a howitzer and mortar from closed positions. The two-section undercarriage provides off-road capability in swamps and hard-to-reach areas.

It has a load capacity of 10 tons and weighs 27.5 tons. It is driven by an 800 horsepower B-46-5C diesel engine, allowing the system to reach a maximum speed of 45 km/h. On water, the vehicle can reach 6 km/h. The advertised autonomy is 700 kilometers.
